That Maastricht has more in tune than just “chic and fancy” waltz music was evident at the official opening of Richie Backfireplein on 19 March.

Richie Backfire is a representative -a billboard- for pop music in general and for Maastricht in particular.

Much was born on the foundation, which Richie was, in a sense. Take Muziekgieterij, which in fact also owes a debt of gratitude to Richie in a spiritual sense. He and his band paved the way for numerous other bands and ensured that this city enjoys a worldwide reputation in hardcore punk and industrial metal. Today, we hear more of that as the “old band” once again goes old-school banging.

The turnout at the opening showed that Richie Backfire’s legacy continues, and we have by no means forgotten him and his drive. The fact that Cesar Zuiderwijk was there proves yet again what this musician, who died far too young and tragically, meant and still means. His legacy will never die. We are proud of that. He set something in motion that will never stop. Something we need: music that brings people together. Music is the unifying factor in polarised times.

We need more music! Where music is made together, discord finds no breeding ground. Music never dies, it is alive and kicking. Muziekgieterij is proof of that. We are ready in the spirit of Richie Backfire to keep the torch burning.

We are proud to open this square, which bears Richie’s name.
