In the spirit of former chairman of Muziekgieterij’s Supervisory Board, Jan Mans, the Jan Mans Award was presented during Bruis 2022. For the first time ever, the honor was given to Belgian talent Caspar Auwerkerken, who, in addition to a record deal with V2 Records, won a residency at both Muziekgieterij in Maastricht and Het Depot in Leuven. The award was presented by creative director Muziekgieterij Wim Smeets, in the presence of Anny Mans, Tom Willinck of V2 Records, Mike Naert of Het Depot and David Zegers of Skytiger management, among others.

Encouragement

The award is intended to encourage young talent who show “passion, dedication and perseverance” in their nascent careers. In addition to the symbolic medal, designed by Art Marks and crafted by Alx Marks, the winning artist or band also receives a cash prize that can be used as a springboard for further career advancement. In Caspar’s case, it will be used to produce the debut album at V2 Records.

Artist in residence

The newfound artist in residence of Muziekgieterij, and also of Het Depot, had been on the radar of the collaborating parties for some time. Among other things, Het Depot’s Open Mic nights opened some doors for Caspar Auwerkerken, who stood out for his songwriting skills as well as his voice. At Muziekgieterij, he stood out during his PA rehearsals, which may have planted the seed for his eventual receipt of the Jan Mans Award.

Support programs

In the meantime, Caspar has already had the opportunity to play in several supporting acts. These included him as support for Meskerem Mees, Portland and Admiral Freebee. At Muziekgieterij, he has already been heard before the public as a support act for Mauro Pawlowski in 2021.

Debut album

Meanwhile, test recordings for his debut album have begun and his management at Skytiger is as proud as a peacock. Caspar Auwerkerken’s album is expected to be released by V2 Records in the fall of 2023.
